The following list of items will give you an understanding of how to read an estimate from a repair shop or insurance company.
R&R Remove & Replace a damaged component with a part that is equal to the part it is replacing
Replace Same as R&R
Repair To repair a component to its original state and shape and functionality and durability
Refinish To apply paint or related materials to the new or repaired part
Overhaul This term is not really accurate on damage estimates. It usually means that an assembly of parts may need to be taken apart in order to replace one or more of the assembly components
O.E.M "Original Equipment Manufacturer". Usually applies to replacement parts made by the manufacturer of your vehicle
Aftermarket These are usually parts that are not made by the manufacturer of your vehicle. Most aftermarket sheet metal replacement parts are not equal to the O.E.M. parts they are replacing. These parts are sometimes called "imitation parts". You should check with the parts supplier and make sure they will guarantee that their parts are equal to the O.E.M parts. Get that exact statement in writing. Alternative Parts This term is loosely used in describing the types of parts being used. It can mean anything the repairer or insurer deems usable other than OEM. If this term appears on your estimate be sure to question what the repair shop or insurer is specifying.
Like Kind And Quality Usually signifies a used part. Used parts are from vehicles that have been sold for salvage or junked. These parts should be reconditioned or repaired before they can be used LKQ Abbreviation for like kind & quality
Quality Replacement Part See "Aftermarket Part" above.
Salvage Part See: Used part, Like Kind & Quality, or LKQ above.
Quality Recycled Part This is a term that can be very misleading. What it actually is, is a used part from a salvaged vehicle that must be recycled by the repair shop in order to make it useable on your vehicle. Sometimes this is not very economical. It depends on the condition of the part that is received from the salvage yard.
Blending & Tinting Blending is a procedure that is required to refinish into an adjacent panel in order to give the illusion of an exact color match. This process requires great skill and ability to perform and when done correctly it will help achieve an invisible repair. Tinting is an operation that is used to adjust the color so as to obtain a shade that is as close as possible to the original finish on the vehicle. This will make the color become a blendable match.
Reman or Remanufactured Remanufactured means to take a used component and replace all integral parts and restore the assembly to a completely restored condition.
Rebuilt To disassemble an assembly and repair or replace ONLY the worn or damaged parts. This is not the same as remanufacturing.
